Dr. Lara Schlaffke receives grant

Dr. Lara Schlaffke receives a grant of 15,000 Euros from the Sophia & Fritz Heinemann Foundation. In her award-winning research project, she is investigating how imaging techniques can be used to diagnose pathological processes in muscle tissue reliably and without invasive surgery. Such procedures could provide physicians with important clues to optimize the treatment of patients with muscle wasting.

DIAGNOSIS ZOMBIE – WHAT NEUROPLASTICITY AND DEGENERATIVE CONDITIONS TELL US ABOUT THE BRAIN
Dr. rer. nat. Stefanie Borowy, AG Neuroplastizität, Neurologische Klinik und Poliklinik, BG Universitätsklinikum Bergmannsheil GmbH

This talk will take you on a tour of the human brain by the work of Harvard lecturer and science-fiction author Steven C. Schlozman. The psychiatrist blurs reality and fantasy in his works and translates the idea of zombieism into a fictional neurological disease called Ataxic Neurodegenerative Satiety Deficiency Syndrome. Individual symptoms of this disease can be traced very well to disorders in defined brain areas, so zombies are a vivid model for many neurodegenerative diseases. An excursion into Neuroparasitology will also show that the concept of zombieism is not as remote from our reality as it first appears.
(talk will be given in german)
