The functions and working methods of museums and memorial sites have changed, in some cases fundamentally, in recent years. For a long time now, exhibitions and museums with historical content have no longer served merely to present historical objects. Their narrative, context and form of presentation, for example, have become at least as important. The same is true for memorials as places steeped in history. In addition to this change in how historical presentations are interpreted and viewed, the diversity and competition of modern media have also made it even more difficult for museums and exhibitions to find the interest of a broader audience.

The demands on historians in the museum and exhibition business have become much more extensive, both in terms of subject matter and content. The understanding of museum and exhibition as a bridge between science and the general public requires interdisciplinary thinking and working, as well as the ability to convey complex historical contexts in an exciting, understandable, modern and entertaining way, but at the same time scientifically sound, didactically conceptualized and seriously presented.

In the practical exercise, the location of museums, exhibitions and memorial sites within public history will first be worked out. This includes the function of museums, exhibitions and memorial sites as forms of mediation oriented towards the recipient. Then the tasks and possibilities are to be pointed out and worked out, which can result for the museum conversion of historical topics: Theory and history of the museum, the museum as a cultural-historical place, special form of exhibition, museums and memorial sites, museum structures, exhibition conception and design, object presentation, forms of catalog, exhibition and object texts, museum pedagogy and didactics as well as museum, visitor and cultural management. Using the example and comparing different museums, exhibitions and memorial sites of the last 30 years, developments, status and possibilities for the presentation and mediation of historical contents will be elaborated.

The tasks in museum and exhibition operations and the demands on what they are supposed to accomplish culturally and educationally have changed fundamentally in recent years. Whereas in the past, for example, the care, preservation and research of cultural assets were the focus of day-to-day work, museums and exhibitions today have to provide above all educational mediation for all age groups, a multimedia presentation that meets the expectations of visitors, and management that is adapted to the cultural market. On the other hand, there are permanent budget cuts by the public sector, which usually finances the operation of museums. Historians in museums often have to be scientists and cultural managers in one person.

Specialist knowledge, flexibility and the willingness to work in an interdisciplinary manner are more important than ever in museum operations today. Museum presentation is always also the visualization of content. "History" is one of the most diverse topics in museums and exhibitions in this regard. It offers broad possibilities for conveying historical and cultural-historical content, but if it is designed incorrectly, it can also overwhelm and bore the visitor. In "public history", museums play an important role as a bridge between specialized scholarship and lay people interested in history.

In this exercise, the possibilities that can arise for the museum implementation of historical topics will be demonstrated and worked out. The theory and history of the museum will be addressed as well as its function as a cultural-historical site. Individual forms of historical content will be elaborated, as well as different methods of presentation and mediation. The focus will be on examples of the everyday work of a museum with its diverse requirements in areas such as exhibition conception and design, object presentation, forms of catalog, exhibition and object texts, museum pedagogy and didactics.
