The collection of original sculptures and portraits is characterised above all by the high quality and rarity of its pieces. Particularly noteworthy here are portrait heads and busts, for example of the Empress Livia or the Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

The bronze larger-than-life deployment head of Emperor Severus Alexander is exceptional. This piece from the first quarter of the 3rd century AD stands out not least because of its numerous damages. These result in part from the forcible removal of the head from his body after death and due to the emperor's 'damnatio memoriae' and were probably inflicted by human hands with axes and pickaxes.

In addition to the antique originals, the Antique Art Collections also present two extraordinary casts of antique ideal sculpture. The Laocoon group, the original of which is exhibited in the Vatican Museums in Rome, shows the priest's bent right arm, which was only found later - casts with the incorrectly added outstretched arm are more common. The reconstruction of the monumental Polyphemus group from the villa of Tiberius in Sperlonga, on the Gulf of Gaeta in Italy, is unique. The plastic reconstruction of the blinding of the Cyclops Polyphemus by Odysseus and his companions, made from casts of preserved parts of the group and reproductions of the scene on other media, is an invaluable achievement of the founding professor of Classical Archaeology in Bochum, Professor Bernard Andreae.
