Holzbau-GIS: Model for sustainable greenhouse gas savings through use of wood in the construction industry

Cooperation with Umwelttechnik + Ökologie, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Disy Informationssysteme GmbH

The project "Holzbau-GIS" contributes to the saving of greenhouse gases by building using wood. An existing and further developed carbon calculation is embedded in a GIS-based web-capable specialised information system and puts the knowledge gained into a regional context.

Using an example municipality, linkage points are generated on the basis of a GIS model, which enable the estimation of GHG savings through new construction and renovation with wood, as well as the regionally available wood resources for energy and material use and their utilisation chain are presented in the model. This enables the municipalities in self-administration to integrate the GHG savings achieved through the use of wood as a building material into the municipal climate protection concepts.

The central core of the project is the analysis of potentials in timber construction at the municipal level as well as the communication and knowledge transfer of gained insights and project results through the development of a model to calculate greenhouse gas savings potentials.
