Die Vorlesung führt in zentrale Themen und Methoden der theoretischen Philosophie ein. Hierzu zählen insbesondere die Erkenntnistheorie, die Sprachphilosophie, die Philosophie des Geistes, die Metaphysik und die Wissenschaftsphilosophie. Die Vorlesung ist für alle Studierenden der Philosophie im ersten Jahr des BA-Studiums verpflichtend, wird von einem obligatorischen Tutorium begleitet und mit einer Klausur abgeschlossen. Das Einführungsmodul wird durch den Besuch eines
Begleitseminars vervollständigt.
Die unten genannten Textsammlungen enthalten Schlüsseltexte der theoretischen Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts, auf die in der Vorlesung eingegangen wird und die zur Hintergrundlektüre geeignet sind.

The colloquium will offer regular presentations given partly by Bochum MA and PhD students and partly by external guests. The presentations will all be in the general domain of theoretical philosophy and the cognitive sciences with a focus on language and concepts. The presentations should ideally, but not necessarily have some interdisciplinary dimension such that perspectives from philosophy, psychology, linguistics and neurosciences can be systematically interconnected. The aim of the colloquium is to offer a platform for the discussion of ongoing research and to support the education of students at the Master and PhD level. Students who are accepted for a presentation in this seminar will receive a special training in preparing presentations in English.
PhD-students who are interested in presentations should write an email to both organizers (albert.newen@rub.de and markus.werning@rub.de ) and come to the first meeting. The semester program will be fixed then. PhD-students can receive 2 credit points for an active participation. MA students can receive 4-6 CP for a presentation in the colloquium (to receive a mark, MA students have to write an additional essay). Topics can be freely chosen such that MA students can develop a
talk in the area of their MA project (Ein avisiertes Masterprojekt kann selbstverständlich im Anschluss in deutscher Sprache ausgearbeitet werden).
Language: The presentations in the colloquium and the discussion will be in English. Questions can be raised in German, but will then be translated for the whole

Natural language semantics is today a wide-ranging and methodologically diverse discipline. One can distinguish broadly between those who use experimental methods from those who don't. Mostly, semanticists in psychology or neuro-science work experimentally, while philosophers, logicians and linguists work nonexperimentally.
However, the variety of approaches and methods among both groups is huge. Even within the camp of theoretical semantics there are numerous communities: formal semantics, possible world semantics, discourse representation theory, etc. The same heterogeneity is present in the camp of empirical researchers: psycho- and neuro-linguistics, corpus linguistics, etc. The aim of the compact seminar is to bring together these different branches which are often working on related topics. The compact seminar will not only present the variety of empirical and theoretical approaches to semantics, but also invites explicit discussions of the neurobiological and psychological basis of semantics as well as its methods, and epistemology.
The compact seminar is part of the program "Forschendes Lernen: Philosophie International" and combines elements of a seminar with those of an international workshop. From Monday to Wednesday we will read and discuss key literature leading up to the topic of the international workshop that will take place from Thursday to Saturday. The guest speakers of the workshop will be announced on the homepage of the compact seminar/workshop. Students are expected to prepare an oral presentation and to actively participate in the workshop (no registration fees apply). A preparatory meeting will be announced after the VSPL-registration is closed.

The seminar provides an introduction to ongoing debates in the philosophy of language with a focus on philosophical and linguistic theories on the interaction between semantics and pragmatics. With the principle of semantic compositionality in mind, we will discuss the influence of situational and linguistic contexts on sentence and word meaning. The big debate between semantic minimalism and contextualism, indexicalism, relativism as well as pragmaticism will be at issue. We will also ask how these controversies might eventually be investigated by means of neurolinguistic studies exploiting characteristic effects in the EEG.
The seminar will enable students to follow and participate in one of the most important currents debates in the philosophy of language, linguistics and cognitive science. As part of the seminar, students will be given the opportunity to visit our on-site EEG lab.
Aside from active participation, participants will be expected to give a presentation in English. Assistance regarding the English language will be provided.
In the winter semester the seminar will be followed by a compact seminar plus workshop with internationally renowned guest speakers as part of the program “Philosophie International”.

Perceptions are often regarded as the prototypical instances of phenomenal consciousness. They are thereby often contrasted with conceptual states that we face in cognition and language comprehension. However, is it true that perceptions are non-conceptual? Do their contents fundamentally differ from the contents of cognitive states? How could they then be epistemically related to cognitive states, how could they serve as the basis of logical inferences? Still the phenomenal quality of perceptions, for many philosophers, seems to withstand any reduction to conceptual structures. However, do perceptions exhibit some of the essential features of conceptual structures at least, namely, systematicity and compositionality? Are there phenomenal concepts? Is it true to say that perceptions are so different from conceptual states because they are informationally encaspsulated in modules? How do perceptions relate to illusions and hallucinations? Do we have to appeal to some sort of disjunctivism?
These and other questions will be of concern to us in the seminar. They will be dealt with on the basis of up-to-date research literature. Participants are expected to take over a presentation. All texts and discussions will be in English. Students will receive active support with regard to active and passive English language skills.

Etwas zu wissen bedeutet mehr, als es nur wahrheitsgemäß zu glauben. Eine beispielsweise durch Raten zustande gekommene, zufällig wahre Meinung wird man schwerlich als Wissen bezeichnen wollen. Doch worin genau besteht die spezifische Differenz zwischen Wissen und bloßer wahrer Meinung? Welche Rolle spielt der Wert der Wahrheit für die Charakterisierung von Wissen?
Innerhalb der Erkenntnistheorie nimmt der Versuch, notwendige und zusammen hinreichende Bedingung für Sätze der Form „S weiß, dass p“ anzugeben, eine zentrale Stelle ein. Nachdem die traditionelle Auffassung, die spezifische Differenz bestehe allein im Vorhandensein einer Rechtfertigung, von Edmund Gettier einer fundamentalen Kritik unterzogen wurde, sind zahlreiche Alternativvorschläge für die Analyse des Wissensbegriffs gemacht worden. Die Frage, welche Analyse man bevorzugt – ob man sich etwa einer internalistischen oder einer externalistischen Analyse verschreibt –, entscheidet oft darüber, wie man sich in anderen erkenntnistheoretischen Problemfeldern positioniert: Ist der Wissensbegriff naturalisierbar? Wie ist dem Skeptiker zu begegnen? Ist der Besitz von Wissen kontextabhängig? Was sind epistemische Tugenden? Diese und verwandte Fragen
sollen im Seminar anhand aktueller Forschungsliteratur geklärt werden.
Von den Seminarteilnehmer(-inne)n wird neben aktiver Teilnahme die Bereitschaft zur Übernahme eines Referats erwartet. Viele Texte liegen ausschließlich in englischer Sprache vor.

Farben und Klänge begleiten uns seit frühester Kindheit und gehören zu dem Vertrautesten, das wir kennen. Doch was sind Farben und Klänge? Gibt es sie überhaupt? Wenn ihnen keine subjektunabhängige Realität zukommt, welchen ontologischen Status haben sie dann? Während Farben in unserer Wahrnehmung normalerweise als Eigenschaften räumlich ausgedehnter Objekte vorkommen, handelt es sich bei Klängen möglicherweise um pure Ereignisse in der Zeit, die kein ausgedehntes Objekt als Träger benötigen. Trotzdem können wir etwa eine Tür zuschlagen hören. Wie verhalten sich diese Hypothesen und Rätsel aus der Metaphysik von Farben und Klängen zu den empirischen Erkenntnissen hinsichtlich ihrer zerebralen Verarbeitung?
Ein weiteres Thema des Seminars ist die kreuzmodale Interaktion von Farben und Klängen. Warum gibt es laute Farben und dunkle Klänge? Neben diesen linguistischen Beispielen für Synästhesie wollen wir auch dem Phänomen synästhetischer Wahrnehmung mithilfe psychophysischer und neurobiologischer Befunde auf den Grund gehen.

In dem Forschungskolloquium werden aktuelle Themen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Philosophie und Kognitionswissenschaft behandelt. Advanced Topics in the Philosophy of Language: The Semantics and Pragmatics of Quotation

Auf den ersten Blick sind Anführungszeichen ein unscheinbares syntaktisches Mittel, um innerhalb einer Sprache auf ihre eigenen Ausdrücke bezugzunehmen. Vom Standpunkt der Sprachphilosophie und der philosophischen Semantik gibt es jedoch kaum eine andere syntaktische Struktur, die größere Probleme aufwirft. Anführung ist ein Mittel der Selbstbezüglichkeit. Sie ist Ausgangspunkt von Tarskis rekursiver Wahrheitsdefinition und der Schlüssel für zahlreiche philosophische Paradoxien.
Anführungen kreieren logisch opake Kontexte. Ihre semantische Analyse scheint allgemein anerkannten Prinzipien der Semantik wie etwa dem Kompositionalitätsprinzip zu widersprechen. Dies ist der Grund, weshalb die Anführung in der Sprachphilosophie jüngst erneut in den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit geraten ist. In dem Seminar sollen zunächst die vielfältigen Kontexte beschrieben werden, in denen Anführungszeichen gebraucht werden. Anschließend nähern wir uns der neueren Forschungsliteratur und versuchen Lösungswege für die genannten Probleme zu formulieren.
Das Seminar ist Teil des Programms "Forschendes Lehren". Die Veranstaltung findet vorbereitend und begleitend zu dem Workshop "The Semantics and Pragmatics of Quotation" statt, der auf der in Bochum vom 26. bis 30. September tagenden Konferenz "Semantics and Philosophy in Europe IV" abgehalten wird. Zentraler Bestandteil ist ein Tutorial, das von dem Dozenten zusammen mit einem international renommierten Experten abgehalten wird.
Von den Seminarteilnehmer(-inne)n wird die Bereitschaft zur Übernahme eines Referats erwartet. Alle Texte liegen ausschließlich in auf Englisch vor. Teile des Seminars werden in englischer Sprache abgehalten. Ein Reader wird bereitgestellt.

Das Prinzip der Kompositionalität der Bedeutung spielt als zentrales Adäquatheitskriterium für jede Bedeutungstheorie eine herausragende Rolle in Philosophie und Linguistik sowie Teilen der Psychologie, Computerwissenschaft und Neurowissenschaft. Es besagt, dass die Bedeutung eines syntaktisch komplexen Ausdrucks eine syntaxabhängige Funktion der Bedeutungen seiner Teile ist.
Die aktuelle Debatte wird im Oxford Handbook of Compositionality (Oxford University Press, 2011) anhand einzelner Artikel zu verschiedensten Fragestellungen wiedergespiegelt. In dem Seminar werden noch nicht erschienene Texte aus dem von Markus Werning mit zwei anderen Wissenschaftlern herausgegeben Handbuch behandelt. Keine philosophische Disziplin hat die moderne Philosophie so sehr geprägt wie die Sprachphilosophie. Im Zuge des „linguistic turn“ haben Fragen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Bedeutung, Wahrheit und Referenz die Diskussion auch in anderen Teildisziplinen maßgeblich beeinflusst. Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Texte der modernen Sprachphilosophie. Ausgehend von Gottlob Frege, werden wir über Bertrand Russell, Nelson Goodman, H. P. Grice, John Searle, Alfred Tarski, Donald Davidson, Hilary Putnam und W.V. Quine den Weg in die zeitgenössische Sprachphilosophie suchen, wo Kommunikationstheorien einerseits und Fragen der Naturalisierbarkeit von Bedeutung andererseits im Vordergrund stehen. Systemisch gehen wir auf Schlüsselprinzipien wie die Determination von Referenz durch Bedeutung, die Kompositionalität von Bedeutung und das Kontextprinzip ein. Von allen Teilnehmern und Teilnehmerinnen wird die Übernahme eines Referats erwartet.

In dem Forschungskolloquium werden aktuelle Themen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Philosophie und Kognitionswissenschaft behandelt. Erwartet werden sowohl auswärtige Vorträge als auch Beiträge von Mitarbeitern, Doktoranden und Masterstudenten aus Bochum. Die Veranstaltung wendet sich nicht nur an Wissenschaftler und fortgeschrittene Studenten aus der Philosophie, sondern auch aus der Linguistik, der Psychologie, den Neurowissenschaften und der Informatik. Das aktuelle Vortragsprogramm wird rechtzeitig bekanntgegeben.
