Partial Differential Equations

Course Description
This is an introductory course to the theory of partial differential equations. We will study the four most important linear equations in mathematical physics; the transport equation, Laplace's equation, the heat equation and wave equation. The course will be structured as a reading course: each student will study one or more topics and present this to the rest of the class in three 60 minute presentations.

The course is worth 9 credit points, and an oral examination must be passed to receive full credit (i.e. a ``benoteten Schein''). In the oral examination students will be asked about topics that they did NOT talk about in their own presentations.

Prerequisites
Analysis I, II, Linear Algebra I, II, and Ordinary Differential Equations. Some measure theory as seen in Analysis III would also be helpful.
