Welcome to the chair in Transcultural History of North America

The transcultural history of North America is interwoven with Euro-Atlantic, hemispheric and global references. The Nation and nation-building, modernization and social change, foreign policy and international relations, cultural contact and migration as well as the changing interdependencies and cultural interactions between Europe, the USA, Canada, Latin America, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region in the globalized world order of the 21st century are just some of the fields that cannot be considered within a national historical framework.
These interdependencies through cultural contact, colonization, migration and slavery have had and continue to have profound consequences for cultural dynamics such as hybridization tendencies, but also conflicts between different ethnic and cultural groups. The exchange of ideas, practices and technologies has influenced social, political and economic development from the 17th century to the present day.
The aim of Transcultural History of North America is to theoretically penetrate cultural-historical issues in historical studies with social-historical and cultural-scientific theories and methods, while also implementing Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies and Critical Race Theory. Important impulses also come from American Studies and historical anthropology, making it possible to question the Eurocentric basic assumptions of the discipline as well as to shed light on the intersectional categories of difference and identity in connection with different ethnic cultures.
