Directions

We recommend downloading and registering for the DB app and the VRR app to purchase tickets, if necessary, more easily in advance than at a ticket machine.

The DB app is suitable for all trains in Germany, while the VRR app is for regional transport in the region that includes Bochum, Dortmund, and Düsseldorf. If you do not plan to travel with faster trains, such as IC or ICE, the VRR app is sufficient. It also includes regional trains.

For trips within the VRR area, we recommend using eezy ticket. These tickets are billed purely based on the distance travelled and are cheaper than regular tickets. Further explanations and download links can be found here: https://www.vrr.de/en/tickets-fares/eezynrw/

From Düsseldorf Airport to Bochum Central station (Hbf):

Upon arriving at the airport follow the signs to the DB (Deutsche Bahn) train station. Take the monorail which takes you to the train station and buy your train ticket to Bochum.  There are trains travelling directly to Bochum Hauptbahnhof ("Hbf"/Central Station) frequently and the trip takes about 35 to 45 minutes depending on which train you take.

Note: There is a price difference between regional and intercity trains. If you choose to purchase your ticket at a ticket machine, please note that the preselection includes all train tiypes. If you wish to take a regional train, which is slightly cheaper, please selebt the opton "regional trains only".

From Dortmund Airport to Bochum Central Station (Hbf):

Take the AirportShuttle bus from the Airport Terminal to Holzwickende train station. (Tickets are bought on the bus). From Holzwickende you take the train to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof (central station) and then change trains to Bochum Hauptbahnhof (central station). You can also take the AirportExpress directly to Dortmund main station once per hour.

From Bochum Central Station (Hbf) to Ruhr University Bochum:

From Bochum Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) take the U35 towards Bochum Hustadt (Querenburg) and get out at stop "Ruhr Universität". (Ticket, if not eezy ticket: Preisstufe A / fare A). On weekdays the subway U35 leaves every 5 minutes and reaches the university within 9 minutes. Other transport connections reach and leave the university directly. Timetables are available on the app or website of the local transportation company "Verkehrsverbund Reihn-Ruhr (VRR)".

From the subway stop "Ruhr-Universität" to the workshop venue (GA 04/187):

From the train station of the U-35 ("Ruhr-Universität") go up the pedestrian bridge and turn right towards the university. Your route takes you directly to the building of the university library. Pass the library on the right side and go down the stairs and continue straight ahead to a second stairway. Go down these stairs and turn right. In front of you to your left you will see 2 tall yellow/brown buildings. The first of these is GA. Enter the building and go through the first glass door to your right and take the elevator/stairs down to floor 04 (not: floor 4!). The workshop takes places in GA 04, room 187.
