DAAD-Prize 2017


DAAD-Price 2017 for Farhad Aslani

This year the DAAD-Price has been awarded to Farhad Aslani from Iran, a Master student of Laser and Photonics.

The award of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is granted to international students who execute outstanding academic performances and demonstrate exceptional social engagement. The award was received during the annual DAAD scholarship holders’ meeting and includes a price of €1000. RUB professors and lecturers may propose qualified students for next year’s award until October 2018.

This year’s awardee was nominated by Jun. Prof. Evgeny Gurevich of Laser Application Technology of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The prize was awarded by the Rector of RUB Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich. Mr. Aslani was selected by a selection committee of the International Office not only due to his outstanding academic performances in Laser and Photonics but also his remarkable social commitment as a tutor for international students.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the annual DAAD scholarship holders’ meeting offered other interesting features. DAAD representive, Dr. Birgit Klüsener gave the DAAD-scholars the opportunity to present their home countries and their international experiences. An interesting presentation “Journey from Wah cantt to Bochum” was held by a student from Pakistan.

In total, students from Afghanistan, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bulgaria, Brazil, Chile, China, France, Georgia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Canada, Cameroon, Kenia, Kirgizia, Colombia, Cuba, Lebanon, Malawi, Macedonia, Mexico, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palestine, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Romania, Russia, Zambia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Serbia, South Korea, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uganda, and Vietnam as well as DAAD-scholars from RUB were invited.

The DAAD is one of the most significant funding organisations for international exchange of students and researchers all over the world and annually funds around 150 international students studying at RUB. Additionally, they also sponsor international students taking part in special projects, and RUB students who are studying abroad.
