Ruhr Fellows

Even more Ruhr Fellows are coming in the summer

The first round of the Ruhr Fellowship Programme for ten students from US-American top universities during summer 2012 was so well received that the hosts have decided to increase the number of places this year. Eight female students and six male students of Engineering and Natural Sciences from Harvard, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania will be visiting in the Ruhr Area in the summer months June and July.

Summer School und Internships

First there will be an academic-cultural summer school at the three universities in the Ruhr Area in June and then the students will go on to complete an internship in a firm in July. The hosts are the Initiativkreis Ruhr and the UAMR (University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr).

Ruhr-Universität Bochum has taken over the academic part of the summer school from the TU Dortmund this year. This involves a German course, cultural and engineering seminars and more. The students will also spend a whole day at each of the other two universities involved, Duisburg-Essen und Dortmund, and go on an excursion to Initiativkreis firms.

The internships will take place at BP Europa, Deutsche Bank, Evonik, Hochtief, ista, RAG, Siemens, SMS, Trimet Aluminium and Vaillant and they will help the participants learn more about the Ruhr Area as Europe’s leading business location.

Ambassadors of the Ruhr Area in North America

The main aim of the programme is to use the contacts gained from the student exchange for long-term research and economic collaborations between the Ruhr Area and the participating American top universities. They are also welcome to take up later employment with a firm in this region. With this in mind, the 14 Ruhr Fellows will be involved in the alumni programme from the ConRuhr liaison office in New York after their return to the United States to represent the Ruhr Area as a research and business location in North America.
