Donation to “Auslandsgesellschaft NRW”
The proceeds of a cake sale during Japanese Week 2011 have been donated to the German-Japanese Society within the “Auslandsgesellschaft NRW”.
RUB hosted a Japanese week between 21 and 25 November 2011, supported by the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK), to commemorate the anniversary of 150 years of friendship between Germany and Japan.
During this week, students, researchers and guests were able to learn more about RUB’s collaboration with Japanese partners during various scientific symposia, prepare for a research- or study-related stay in Japan, try out traditional Japanese art in the origami, haiku and ikebana workshops, witness martial arts and dancing performances, take part in the karaoke night and enjoy Japanese food in the Mensa.
Cake sale on Japan Info Day
The Japan Info Day took place on 23 November. This was an information event for all students and scientists interested in an exchange visit to Japan and many different organisations presented their offers. During this event, a group of committed students organised a cake sale, intending to donate the proceeds to the victims of the catastrophes which hit Japan in March 2011.
Cake donations were collected at RUB and elsewhere so that an impressive buffet could be presented on the Info Day. The organisers of the Japanese Week, the International Office and the St. Josef’s hospital, helped by providing the stand along with coffee and cold drinks.
More than 300 Euros collected
A total of €332.70 was collected. This has now been donated to the German-Japanese Society within the “Auslandsgesellschaft NRW”. This organisation started a project in 2011, bringing children from the disaster zone to the holiday paradise Okinawa, where they can spend a carefree holiday. During the summer holidays in 2011 and spring holiday in 2012, more than 100 children were able to spend their holidays in Okinawa, financed by donations. The project is to be continued in summer holidays in 2012.
“We are very happy to receive this donation”, said Yoko Schlütermann, chairwoman of the German-Japanese Society. “The children from the disaster zone can only play outside during holiday times if they’re outside the Fukushima province. Therefore we really want to continue our project and that’s why we need donations like this.”
