The University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr has opened her ConRuhr-office in Brazil

The University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (UAMR), a network between the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the Technische Universität Dortmund and the Universität Duisburg-Essen, is now also present in Latin America. In addition to the offices in New York and Moscow, on May 9th the third office was opened in Rio de Janeiro in the presence of many prominent guests.

Just a couple of days before, the Deutsche Wissenschafts- und Innovationshaus (German House of Science and Innovation) had a Topping Out ceremony in São Paulo. There, another office of ConRuhr Latin America shall be situated.

During the ceremony, the German Federal President Christian Wulff was also present and was presented by UAMR-Delegation with the atlas of the Metropolis Ruhr and the new tricot of the BVB Dortmund, current German football champion. During his speech, President Wulff stressed that he is convinced of Brazil and gave details on his meeting with Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, with whom he had just signed an agreement on strengthening cooperation in research and student exchange.

The UAMR-office „ConRuhr Latin-America“ will be directed by Prof. Dr. Christoph de Oliveira Käppler of TU Dortmund. “We are beginning our presence in South American at the right moment, the Brazilian president just having announced Germany is to receive 10 percent of the new 100.000 scholarships for stays abroad. The dynamical development of the Brazilian Economy is promising great possibilities for cooperation, especially as German universities are highly regarded in South America.”

Main goals and tasks for the new office are: To promote the Universities of the alliance as being excellent places for research and study and to help them be better known in South America, so that international university cooperation can be fostered. The office will be on location to intensify and summarize UAMR’s activities in the area, so that new networks can be built up. In addition, student exchange shall be intensified, excellent doctoral fellows won and mobility of researchers fostered. New cooperation, including for example joint degree programmes and knowledge exchange shall be developed.
