Annual Academic Celebration 2026
Dear members and their families, alumni, friends, and supporters of Ruhr University Bochum,
I am pleased to invite you to this year’s Annual Academic Celebration:
27th Annual Academic Ceremony
on Wednesday, November 18, 2026
at 5:00 p.m. in the Audimax at Ruhr University Bochum, Universitätsstr. 150, 44801 Bochum
We all feel it every day: A society thrives not only on facts and figures, but on the ability not only to measure the world, but also to understand it —in the truest sense of the word. Art and science are not separate spheres, but rather two perspectives that challenge and enrich one another. Our university’s remarkable art collections are not only a venue for this important exchange but also build a bridge to society. That is why, at this Academic Annual Celebration, we are dedicating ourselves to this very exciting dialogue: how both worlds inspire one another and why their interaction is indispensable for a vibrant, open society.
We are particularly pleased that this year we are joined by art historian
Prof. Dr. Carolin Behrmann
from our Institute of Art History as our keynote speaker. She combines her interdisciplinary research on the visual arts of the Early Modern period with contemporary issues and, in her lecture, takes us on an exciting journey through art-historical research.
In addition to the excellent reputation of our Institute of Art History, we also owe it to the dedication of private donors that we at Ruhr University Bochum have outstanding collections of modern and contemporary art. We would therefore like to use this evening to honor Heinz Ludwig Alexander von Berswordt-Wallrabe, anative of Bochum, with the title of Honorary Citizen of Ruhr University—a distinction recognizing his lasting impact on art and culture in Bochum and beyond through his dedication.
Additional program highlights:
- Speech by Prof. Dr. Martin Paul, Rector of Ruhr University Bochum, following the decision on the federal and state Excellence Strategy
- Presentation of the Lore-Agnes-Vision Award for outstanding contributions to gender equality, diversity, inclusion, and/or anti-discrimination
- Recognition of outstanding academic achievements
For the musical entertainment, we are pleased to welcome the Ruhr University Pop Choir.
Following this diverse program, we’ll provide an opportunity for lively discussion and invite you to a reception at the coffee bar. Look forward to personal conversations with many old and new acquaintances!
