Profil

Nach ihrem Studium der Islamwissenschaft, Islamischen Philologie und Semitistik promovierte Birgit Mershen 1982 an der Johannes-Gutenberg Universität Mainz.
Sie unterrichtete an der Yarmouk University, Irbid - Jordanien (1983-1990), der Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat – Oman (1995-2003), war Beraterin am Ministerium für Erbe und Kultur, Muscat (2003-2009) und für die Oman National Spatial Strategy (2017-2019)) und hat zahlreiche Forschungsprojekte durchgeführt. Ihr Interessensschwerpunkt liegt auf sozial- und siedlungshistorischer sowie ethnographischer und ethnoarchäologischer Forschung im Nahen und Mittleren Osten.

Seit Juni 2019 ist sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Seminar für Orientalistik und Islamwissenschaft der Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
