Jakob Krais ist seit Januar 2022 im Rahmen des Teilprojekts A01 „Weg und Rechtleitung. Die Entwicklung koranischer Raum- und Bewegungsmetaphern in der Tafsīr-Literatur“ (Leitung: Prof. Dr. Johann Büssow) des SFB 1475 „Metaphern des Religiösen: Religiöse Sinnbildung in sprachlichen Prozessen“ wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Seminar für Orientalistik und Islamwissenschaft. Er studierte Geschichte, Islamwissenschaft und Philosophie in Berlin und Rom, wurde an der Freien Universität Berlin mit einer Dissertation zu Geschichtsschreibung in Qaddafis Libyen promoviert und arbeitete danach an verschiedenen Hochschulen in Berlin und Bremen. Als Stipendiat der Gerda Henkel Stiftung war er mit einem Projekt zum spätkolonialen Algerien am Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) und am Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin sowie am Centrum für Nah- und Mitteloststudien (CNMS) in Marburg assoziiert. Aus diesem Forschungsvorhaben ist seine Habilitationsschrift „Shaping the Modern Body: A Somatic Cultural History of Late Colonial Algeria, c. 1919-1962“ hervorgegangen, die er an der Fakultät für Philologie der RUB eingereicht hat. Jakob Krais’ Forschungsschwerpunkte sind unter anderem die Kultur- und Ideengeschichte der arabischen Welt, vor allem des modernen Maghreb, sowie islamische Reform, Kolonialismus, Jugend und Gender.
