Faculty of Philology
Department of Oriental and Islamic Studies

The Department of Oriental and Islamic Studies offers a variety of courses covering the fields of languages, sciences, religions, societies and history connected to a culture extending back to the 7th century AD, stretching from Africa to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East as well as from Central Asia to the Indian Subcontinent and South Asia, uniting one third of the world’s population.

While Oriental Philology concentrates on regional languages, literature and historical sources, Islamic Studies focuses on various social and cultural aspects.

Both disciplines are an integral part of Cultural Studies based on Philology. They relate to a large amount of other disciplines, providing students with a wide range of choices for their studies at RUB.
