"Chancen Ostasien" – RUB students host a fair on opportunities in East Asia

The information- and careers fair "Chancen Ostasien" will take place for the first time on Friday 22 June 2012 in the "Landesspracheninstitut" of Ruhr-Universität Bochum. The fair is aimed at students from the Faculty of East Asian Studies and will provide information on job opportunities after graduation in lines of business related to East Asia. The event is free of charge and will be organised by RUB's student representatives from the Faculty of East Asian Studies.

What can I do after my graduation?

At some point, all students of East Asian studies will have to ask themselves "What can I do after my graduation?" Graduates of East Asian studies actually occupy a niche position on the employment market that is rarely directly sought-after during recruitment events or in job advertisements. Nevertheless, the information- and careers fair "Chancen Ostasien" that will take place this Friday in RUB's Landesspracheninstitut shows that there are various, particularly exciting job opportunities related to East Asia. Ten alumni of the Faculty of East Asian Studies will be present at the fair to talk about their career entry and professional experience. There will be representatives from different lines of business, ranging from a translator for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to a self-employed management consultant. The presentations will be accompanied by a supporting programme with information stands from the different organisations such as the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit" (GIZ) and AIESEC.

From students for students

The project "Chancen Ostasien" is an initiative of RUB's student representatives from the Faculty of East Asian Studies. They came up with the idea after a discussion about how services for guiding students and helping them prepare for a professional career could be improved. Due to a shortage of funds and staff, the students decided to pursue the project on their own on a voluntary basis. The fair "Chancen Ostasien" later qualified for funding after they successfully participated in the competition “Studentische Initiativprojekte” hosted by RUB's project office “inStudies”.
