Westerwelle opening DWIH

UAMR office opened in São Paulo

Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister, Dr. Guido Westerwelle, declared the German House of Science and Innovation in São Paulo open on 14 February, initiating collaborations between the two countries. The University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (UAMR) is one of the partners of the German House of Science and Innovation in São Paulo. The office in São Paulo is a subsidiary of the liaison office “ConRuhr Latin America” that was opened in Rio de Janeiro (located at the DAAD) in 2011.

Brazilian Research and Innovation Landscape

Coordinators of “ConRuhr Latin America”, director Prof. Dr. Christoph Käppler and office manager Dr. Stephan Hollensteiner, joined the Minister on his tour of the German House of Science and Innovation. They pointed out the diversity and strengths of science and innovation in the Ruhr region and the tour was accompanied by information and chocolate from the Ruhr area. Westerwelle emphasised the importance of the Brazilian research and innovation landscape, particularly in São Paulo, as this is the region outside of Germany where the largest amount of German companies are carrying out research. He considers the opening of the German House of Science and Innovation to be the start of many German-Brazilian collaborations, and welcomes the programme “Ciências sem Fronterias” (science without borders), which was launched by the Brazilian government to enable 10,000 Brazilian students and researchers to undertake research and study visits to Germany during the next three years.

UAMR praised

Prof. Dr. Margarete Wintermantel, president of DAAD and the German Rectors' Conference/Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) and member of the Federal Foreign Minister’s delegation, also visited the UAMR office in Rio de Janeiro. She praised the UAMR for its great dedication to its offices in Brazil, which are active throughout Latin America.
