PhD projects
The PhD projects are available immediately and will run for ca. 42 months. Projects will be integrated into the education curriculum of the International Graduate School of Neuroscience (www.rub.de/igsn). The doctoral degree of either PhD in Neuroscience or Dr.rer.nat will be conferred upon successful completion of the doctoral project.

MD projects
If you are a medical student of the Ruhr University Bochum and have completed your Physikum, you can pursue a medical doctorate (MD) degree within the Department of Neurophysiology. The focus will be on studies of hippocampu-dependent spatial learning (see Kemp and Manahan-Vaughan, Trends Neurosci 2007, 30:118), and its regulation by physiological and pathological states.

Msc projects

MSc projects typically involve research into the mechanisms underlying memory formation and can focus on either fundamental questions or disease models.

Methods typically comprise a selection of the following:

  • In vitro electrophysiological recordings of field potentials from the rodent brain
  • In vitro electrophysiological recordings of single neurones from the rodent brain
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Western blotting
  • Histological analysis
  • In situ hybridisation
  • Human EEG recordings
  • Animal behaviour (neurobiological anaysis of learning behaviour in rodents)
  • Optogenetics

BSc projects
If you are a BSc student of the Ruhr University Bochum and are about to enter your final year of studies, you may apply for a BSc research project at the Department of Neurophysiology. Projects have a focus on biochemistry, psychology or biology and therefore can be integrated into your qualifications for a BSc in Chemistry, Psychology or Biology.
