Eastern Europe, especially Eastern Central Europe, is characterized by a rare, but high degree of ethnic and cultural diversity. This diversity influenced the development of the region, leading to territorial and imperial claims, violence, and forced migration. At the same time, however, ethnic cultures were shaped by this diversity and exchange developed.
The joint appointment of the director of the Martin Opitz Library in Herne created a unique chair. Its main focus is on the history and culture of Germans in Eastern Europe and their cultural heritage in their respective contexts in teaching and research. Since the culture and history of Germans developed in interaction with the history of other ethnic groups and states, the courses focus on mutual influences and ethnic and cultural diversity. However, they also introduce the historical contexts that are necessary to understand this cultural diversity and historical development. Take advantage of this special subject and learn about the many facets of this history!
