The Research Unit “Simulation-based design and production of load-optimised freeform components by laser metal deposition (DED-LB/M)” at MSE 2026 in Darmstadt

From September 29 to October 1, almost 1,200 participants from 42 countries gathered in Darmstadt for MSE 2026 (Materials Science and Engineering Congress). The conference focused on current developments in materials science and manufacturing processes.

Our researchers participated in this international conference and presented their research in a dedicated session organized specifically for the research unit, exchanged ideas with colleagues from around the world, and gained new insights and inspiration for their ongoing work.

From Ruhr University Bochum, Jann Kulik presented “Reduced-Order Thermal Modeling for Controller Design in Coaxial Wire-Based DED-LB/M” and “Simulation-Guided Laser Power Profile Derivation for Feedforward Control in Coaxial Wire-Based DED-LB/M”; Dominique Piorreck presented “Investigation of Weld Seam Shape in Out-of-Position Wire-Based DED-LB/M”; Felix Großwendt presented “Local Austenite Stability of Austenitic Stainless Steel Produced by Directed Energy Deposition”; and Jan Schachtsiek presented “Influence of Laser Power in Wire-Based DED-LB/M on Cutting Forces in Robot-Assisted Hybrid Manufacturing.” Max von Zabiensky (Leibniz University Hannover) presented “On Manufacturing-Oriented Topology Optimization in the DED-LB/M Process,” while Jonathan Hann (University of Wuppertal) presented “Influence of Heat Transfer Conditions on Microstructure Formation in a Tool Steel Processed by DED-LB/M Using Flux-Cored Wire.”
