Conditions of participation

The Department of Science Communications at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is setting up a contest on the subject “Science in Pictures” in 2015.

Contest task

Research fascinates, creates every day new findings about the world and prepares the technologies of tomorrow. Thereby again and again new pictures are being produced which are unexpectedly beautiful. Filigree structures are disclosed under the microscope, old writings get collected on the desk of the researcher, beautiful mineral distributions remind on modern paintings and colourful simulation data give theoretical research an artistic paint. Often the pictures, which are produced in the lab or on the desk, do not only have scientific values but they also inspire the observer through their aesthetics. What kind of pictures are produced during your work at RUB? The Department of Science Communications is seeking your most beautiful picture of research.

Show us by your picture the artistic side of your scientific work and write us what the motive is all about.

Prizes

A jury will choose the best 28 contributions. These pictures will be displayed in a public exhibition in the city of Bochum and will also be published on the Internet. The best three contributions will be awarded with the following prizes:

  1. Prize: Apple iPad
  2. Prize: Restaurant voucher for two
  3. Prize: Voucher for 100 Euros at the restaurant Q-West at RUB-Campus

Via online voting, the audience chooses the best 13 motives which will be printed as a calendar and sold.

Participants

All RUB-members who are doing research in an institution of RUB at the time of the application period have the opportunity to participate in the contest. The minimum age required is 18. In order to use the online-form, you will need your Rechenzentrum LoginID – the one you also use to login at the RUB-email server. The members of the jury and the organisation team are excluded from participating in the contest.

Submission documents

Every participant can submit two pictures. No matter how you produced those pictures (photography, microscopy, computer simulation etc.), they just have to be developed during your research work. The pictures must be submitted as a jpg, eps, psd or tiff file with a resolution of at least 200 dpi in the format of DIN-A4. These requirements are necessary to meet the printing guidelines for the exhibition and calendar, should your picture be selected. If your picture does not fulfill the requirements but you wish to participate, please contact us at bilderwettbewerb@rub.de. The submission will be carried out via an online-form.

Additional to the picture, you must also submit a text via the online-form about the picture itself (maximum of 2000 characters incl. spaces). It should explain what is seen on the picture, why the motive is relevant for your scientific work and what is the most fascinating aspect of your research. This text will be considered by the judging panel. The contest procedure is anonymous. The participant confirms with his/her participation that he/she holds the rights over the submitted material. Third party rights must not be affected. The competitors acknowledge the published rules by their participation. Contributions which do not comply with these rules may be deemed ineligible at a preliminary inspection and will then take no further part in the competition.
