@SBersick

The Department of “International Political Economy of East Asia” (IPEEA) was established in 2015 at the Faculty of East Asian Studies. Research and teaching focuses on the internal and external dimension of regional affairs and economic integration in East Asia and the role of the European Union (EU), especially with regard to the People’s Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Jean Monnet Chair

Jean Monnet Chairs (JMC) are funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the EU with the aim to promote excellence in teaching and research in EU Studies. Since the establishment of the Jean Monnet Programme in 1990, the European Commission aims at supporting teaching, research and critical thinking in the field of European integration studies at the level of higher education institutions within and outside the European Union. The activities also foster the dialogue between the academic world and policy-makers, in particular with the aim of enhancing governance of EU policies. The Jean Monnet Chair´s key activities include teaching, research, conferences, networking activities, and publications in the field of EU studies.

Prof. Bersick has been awarded twice with a Jean Monnet Chair (2020-2023 and 2016-2019). The position is awarded based on promoting excellence in teaching and research on EU studies, fostering debate on Europe-related issues, encouraging active citizenship, and disseminating knowledge to the wider public, in a critical, evidenced-based and objective manner. The first Jean Monnet Chair was awarded for the project entitled “The International Political Economy of EU-Asia Relations” (IPEEAR) [2016-2019]; the second for the project entitled “Connecting Europe and Asia: People, Power and Policies” (CEAPPP) [2020 – 2023]. The corresponding funding covers teaching and research activities over a period of three years.
