Gangs of New York (2002) - Crime/Drama/History

Set in New York City in the year 1863, the film tells the story of Amsterdam Vallon who returns to Five Points Area in New York to seek revenge against Bill Butcher, the murderer of his father. With the support of a group of pickpockets, Vallon goes to seek justice and bring peace to the area. The characters speak various varieties of English as spoken in America at that time.

Taxi Driver (1976) - Drama/Thriller

Set in the USA, this film portrays Travis Bickle (Robert de Niro), a New York night-time taxi driver, who constantly, and almost obsessively, reflects on the ugly corrupt and fraudulent life around him. He becomes increasingly disturbed by his own loneliness and alienation. This film features American English, in particular, New York English.

Spanglish (2004) - Comedy/Drama/Romance

In this film Flor and her daughter Cristina leave Mexico to find a better life in the United States. Flor starts to work as a housekeeper for a wealthy family in Los Angeles. The man of the house, portrayed by Adam Sandler, is a newly celebrated chef, and his insecure wife treats Cristina just like her own child – to the dismay of her daughter Bernice. The film nicely illustrates code-switching between English and Spanish.
