Title : Defeasible Case-Based Reasoning in Ethics: A Logic-Based Argumentative Model
Existing formal models for case-based reasoning target the legal domain and focus on whether precedents strictly force the evaluation of the target case. In ethics, however, precedents play a different role: they inform defeasible arguments rather than impose strict constraints. We propose an argumentative model for defeasible case-based reasoning in ethics. We present a sequent calculus that generates presumptive arguments from precedents and we use formal argumentation to tackle the tensions between arguments. Finally, we use Dung-style semantics to specify which arguments should be accepted under rational evaluation.
