Constitutional Amendment XIII, 1865
Das 13. Amendment brachte zu Ende, was nach Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation nur für die Staaten der Confederation galt: die Befreiung der Sklaven. Es wurde am 31. Januar 1865 vom Congress angenommen und am 6. Dezember 1865 ratifiziert.

 

Article XIII.

Section. 1.
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section. 2.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
