Digital health literacy from a social science perspective
Health literacy has been the subject of scientific discussion since the 1960s. Over the past ten years, the topic has gained considerable importance and is increasingly being incorporated into political strategies and programs. With ongoing digitalization, digital health literacy has also come into sharper focus. This relatively young field of research is characterized by a high density of publications and a wide range of concepts and measurement tools, which continue to be the subject of critical debate and for which no clear consensus has yet been reached.
This dissertation examines health literacy from a sociological perspective – a viewpoint that has so far rarely been adopted. It explores how the discourse on digital health literacy has evolved and which social structures, particularly patterns of reproduction and consolidation, emerge in this context. In addition, it analyzes various areas of competence and their influence on health and health-related behavior.
