Visiting Authors

On Monday and Tuesday, 18 and 19 June 2013, the Research Unit hosted two prom­i­nent writers from Taiwan, Wu Mingyi 吳明益 and Wu Yinning 吳音寧. On Tuesday from 10 to 12 a.m., the two writers read passages from their books and answered questions from the audience. The event was well attended and audience participation was lively. The event was co-sponsored by the Taiwan Literature Development Foundation (台灣文學發展基金會) as part of a bi-national cultural exchange initiative. [poster]

On 20 July 2011, the Research Unit hosted two other authors from Taiwan, Ms Cai Su-Fen 蔡素芬 and Mr Hung Hung 鴻鴻, for whom were organized a reading session and a lecture (delivered by Ms Cai) and a discussion on the current state of literature in Taiwan. The event was likewise co-sponsored by the Taiwan Literature Development Foundation.

Visiting Scholars

In order to promote scholarly exchange, several scholars have been invited to Bochum during the past years. As part of their visits, the Research Unit organized a number of events, such as talks and smaller workshops. Visiting scholars included Prof Li Xiangping 黎湘萍 from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Peking and the Taiwanese literary historian Peng Ruijin 彭瑞金.

From 1 May to 6 June 2002, Prof Li Xiangping 黎湘萍 conducted a research stay as guest of the Department of Chinese Languages and Literatures. During his visit the following events took place:

  • a talk by Prof Li on "Tales of Two Islands – Taiwanese Fictions in Japanese and the
    Dilemma of the National Identities of the Intellectuals"
  • a workshop conducted by Prof Li on Taiwanese post-war literature with students of the Faculty of
    East Asian Studies titled "从现代主义到后现代主义" [From modernism to postmodernism]
  • another workshop by Prof Li on "乡土小说与另类现代性" [Xiangtu literature and other kinds of modernism]

From 6 to 27 June 2000, Peng Ruijin 彭瑞金 worked at the Department of Chinese Languages and Literatures. During his visit the following events took place:

  • a workshop with Faculty students on the topic of "臺灣文學的本土化過程" [The history of nativism in Taiwanese literature]
  • another workshop on "臺灣文學的認同衝突" [Identity conflicts in Taiwanese literature]
  • an introduction to contemporary Taiwanese literature titled "Taiwanese Literature – A Fair Stranger"
    at the Kulturzentrum Bahnhof Langendreer in Bochum, which included selected readings of works by
    Huang Chunming, Li Minyong, Li Kuixian and Zhang Dachun in German translation.

Other Visitors

On Friday, 24 April 2015, the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum welcomed Taiwanese film director and producer Wei Te-Sheng 魏德聖 for a discussion meeting with RUB students on his movies and on the history of Taiwan. Wei, who is known for Hái-kak Chhit-hō 海角七號 (Cape No. 7; 2007), Seediq Bale 賽德克·巴萊 (Warriors of the Rainbow; 2011) and KANO (Kano; 2014; scriptwriter, producer), was accompanied by fellow producer Jimmy Huang (Huang Chih-ming 黃志明), who has worked with him on these three movies.
On the day before, East Asian Studies instructors Achim Kehlenbach and Prof. Christine Moll-Murata offered an additional introductory session on the work of Wei Te-Sheng. (Announcement | Photo 1 | Photo 2 | Photo 3)
