Study at RUB

Welcome to the Ruhr University Bochum and its Legal Faculty! If you are thinking about studying here, please, allow us to guide you through the basics as you get started

Getting started:

The Legal Faculty of the RUB is the only one of its kind in the Ruhr area. The Campus of the RUB is directly connected to both the motorway and Bochum’s central train station. As a RUB student, you can travel across the whole of North-Rhine Westphalia with the public transportation ticket included in your student ID.

Financing:

If you are a student from within the EU, Norway, or Turkey, you might be interested in the ‘ERASMUS’ mobility program. You can find more information about the application process here.

If you are an international student from outside the EU, you might be interested in becoming a Freemover at RUB. For more information about the Freemover program is available here.

Registering at the RUB:

Your registration as a student at RUB is simple: Following the nomination by your university (for ERASMUS students) or your personal application to the International Office, you will receive an e-mail from the RUB’s International Office with further instructions and a link to the registration website.

Orientation courses:

If you want to improve your language skills before the semester starts and familiarize yourself with the campus and surroundings, join an orientation course for Incomings (starting mid-September / Winter Semester). The course combines German language classes with help regarding your paperwork, interesting trips and a variety of leisure activities (fees: € 300,- incl. lunch, courses, workshops, excursions etc.). More information and a link to the registration form are available here.

During the semester, RUB offers supplementary German language courses free of charge. For further information, please visit www.rub.de/daf/begleitend.html.

Getting to know fellow students:

The Legal Faculty offers an International Twin Program (InTwin) to bring foreign and German students together. For more information on InTwin, please visit http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/zfi-jura/intwin.html.

Starting your semester:

During the University’s orientation week at the beginning of the Winter Semester, RUBiss (RUB’s International Student Service) will provide you with important information and help with formalities, such as registering and enrolling for courses. You can also attend workshops, take part in a guided city tour to get familiar with your new environment and meet and greet your fellow international students. For further information, please visit rubiss@rub.de.

The Legal Faculty:

The Faculty has an attractive and comprehensive curriculum for both national and international students. In addition to the regular courses, guest lectures, legal language courses and courses of our specialized institutes (e.g. Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict, Institute for Social Law, Institute for Mining and Energy Law) complement the offer. Incoming students may choose from a wide range of courses on the general legal principles in German law as well as a variety of courses held in English, allowing a first glimpse into other legal systems of the world. In this regard, the Faculty offers an Anglo-American Law & Language Certificate Program, which is also open to Incoming students and can be completed in two semesters (for more information, please visit: http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/zfi-jura/certificate_en.html). Additionally, the Faculty offers a special course exclusively for foreign students giving an introduction to German law taught in German (Einführung in das deutsche Recht) every Winter Semester.
