"Metropolitan Japan in Historical and Contemporary Perspective"

The quantity and quality of research on metropolitan regions has grown remarkably in recent years. In the ongoing process
of urbanisation, metropolises are often considered as models for urban development and planning. While social scientists are interested in the role and functions of metropolises in the regional, national and global economy, historians tend to focus more on their specifically “metropolitan” cultural development. Looking at Japan, we seek to combine both perspectives.
The conference shall examine the major political, economic, social and cultural transformations that have shaped and are still shaping metropolitan Japan from the age of empire and industrialization to the contemporary

The German Association for Social Science Research on Japan, with the Faculty of Geosciences and the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Ruhr University Bochum, has invited scholars to reflect on the multiple transformations of metropolitan regions in Japan. Globalising forces and post-industrial transformations of the entrepreneurial city, processes of demographic ageing, global environmental change, and the impact of technological innovation confront Japan’s urban development path with both challenges and opportunities.
