Gelsenkirchen: Nordsternpark

Nordsternpark is a landscape park located on the premises of the former coal mine Zeche Nordstern in Gelsenkirchen. After Zeche Nordstern was decommissioned in 1993, the grounds were redeveloped and have been now turned into a landscape park with cycle lanes, footpaths and playgrounds. In 1997, the horticulture show Bundesgartenschau took place here. Nordsternpark is traversed by Rhein-Herne-Kanal and the river Emscher. The park is part of the European Garden Heritage Network as well as Route der Industriekultur. The premises also house the Gelsenkirchen amphitheatre. Here, a wealth of events takes place, mainly in spring and summer: e.g. Rock Hard Festival, the canal festival, open-air cinema and Blackfield Festival.
