Biography |

Since October 2015 Dennis Wuerthner (Dr.des) works as research and teaching assistant at the Department of Korean Studies at Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB). Also, he is partly employed within the realm of the English Translation of 100 Korean Classics Project conducted under the auspices of RUB and the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) for the translation of P’ahan chip (Collection to Break up Idleness) by Yi Illo. He received his Ph.D. from RUB in 2014. From 2009-2011 he worked as project manager of the AKS-RUB/FUB Overseas Leading University Program for Korean Studies Circulation of Knowledge and the Dynamics of Transformation. Furthermore, he has been part of a team of lecturers led by Dorothea Hoppmann at the Landesspracheninstitut in der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Korean language courses for beginners and advanced learners) since 2007. From 2010 to 2015 he translated Kŭmo sinhwa (New Tales of the Golden Turtle) by Kim Sisŭp within the framework of the AKS/University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Korean Classics Library (translation forthcoming in 2016). In 2007 he was the winner of the Korean Literature Translation Institute's (KLTI) 6th Korean Literature Translation Award for the translation of Eskimo, hier ist das Ende (Eskimo, this is the end) by Kim Chunghyŏk..

In his Ph.D. thesis (forthcoming) Nine Clouds in Motion: A Study of Hypertexts of Kuunmong, focusing on Kuullu/Kuun’gi he studied 19th century adaptations of Kim Manjung’s Kuunmong (A Dream of Nine Clouds), particularly focusing on the novels Kuullu / Kuun’gi (The Nine Cloud Tower / The Nine Cloud Records) and Oksŏnmong (A Dream of a Jade Immortal).
