Master programme Public History at the Ruhr University Bochum

The last decades saw a rising interest in history in the wider public. This leads to both social responsibilities and the formation of new a research and professional field of the discipline of history. The Master of Public History takes account of this development, engaging with all the multiple manifestations of history in the public sphere. The content emerges from the field of history and memory culture, since both constitute the relevant public representations and debates on history as well as the prevailing actors and institutions from society and politics, science, culture and creative industries. Topics are not limited to modern history, but rather epoch-spanning.

Public History aims at both actively shaping these processes in terms of content and media, and analysing their cognitive, political, aesthetical and economic dimensions. Accordingly, Public History is both a social phenomenon and a scientific discipline. The Master programme aims at deepening subject-specific capabilities and skills, teaching students didactical competencies of historical knowledge transmission and historical learning in non-school contexts. In theoretical and practical modules, future public historians learn to process complex historical contexts in the tense atmosphere of science and the public. Practical courses, the internship semester and the exchange with professional public historians provide insights into institutions, professions and media of non-school history teaching.
