Public History deals with all forms of public history. The contents of Public History result from the thematic focuses of memory and historical culture formulated by actors and institutions from society and politics, as well as science, culture and the creative economy, which shape public representations of and debates about history. Accordingly, these are not limited to modern history, but are positioned across epochs. Public history thus describes both a social phenomenon and a scientific discipline.

Research Project

Public History aims at both actively shaping processes of history in the public in terms of content and media, and analysing their cognitive, political, aesthetical and economic dimensions. Accordingly, Public History is both a social phenomenon and a scientific discipline.

Workshop "Public History in der Lehre"

On 2./3.12.2019 the workshop "Public History in der Lehre" will take place at the Ruhr-Universität. Under the direction of Christian Bunnenberg and Irmgard Zündorf (ZZF Potsdam), the participants will discuss the experiences and perspectives of the various Public History courses in Germany. What are their goals, what is taught or learned, what do the teachers and students expect?
The aim of the workshop is to bring together teachers, students and graduates* from the various university locations in order to critically reflect on the current state of the study programme in the field of public history in German-speaking countries, perhaps also to take stock, to discuss possible common goals and standards, or to highlight differences and perhaps to sound out an outlook for future cooperation. The aim of the workshop is not only the joint exchange of different study programmes, but also the development of concrete impulses for the (further) development of the study programmes.

Master programme

The Master of Public History takes account of this development, engaging with all the multiple manifestations of history in the public sphere. The content emerges from the field of history and memory culture, since both constitute the relevant public representations and debates on history as well as the prevailing actors and institutions from society and politics, science, culture and creative industries. Topics are not limited to modern history, but rather epoch-spanning.
