Research Project

The research focus Public History deals with all forms of public history. The objects of investigation result from the thematic fields of memory and historical culture, which are set by actors and institutions from society and politics, as well as science, culture and creative industries, and which have been used by the media, and which shape public representations of and debates about history. The research is not limited to contemporary history, but encompasses all epochs. The task of Public History is to help shape the processes of conveying and presenting history to the public in terms of content and media and at the same time to explore its cognitive, political, aesthetic, moral and economic dimensions. Public History thus describes both a social phenomenon and a scientific discipline.

Workshop "Public History in der Lehre"

On 2./3.12.2019 the workshop "Public History in der Lehre" will take place at the Ruhr-Universität. Under the direction of Christian Bunnenberg and Irmgard Zündorf (ZZF Potsdam), the participants will discuss the experiences and perspectives of the various Public History courses in Germany. What are their goals, what is taught or learned, what do the teachers and students expect?
The aim of the workshop is to bring together teachers, students and graduates* from the various university locations in order to critically reflect on the current state of the study programme in the field of public history in German-speaking countries, perhaps also to take stock, to discuss possible common goals and standards, or to highlight differences and perhaps to sound out an outlook for future cooperation. The aim of the workshop is not only the joint exchange of different study programmes, but also the development of concrete impulses for the (further) development of the study programmes.
