    BA Seminar: Taiwan 1600-1895: Quellen und heutige Rezeption / Taiwan 1600-1895: Sources and Contemporary Perception

    Teachers: Prof. Dr. Christine Moll-Murata, with guest professors Dr. Chien Hung-yi (TAP) and Prof. Dr. Lin Hsin-yi (National Taiwan Normal University)
    Time: Wednesdays, 14-16 h

    Course information: This seminar is dedicated to the political and social history of Taiwan during the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, starting from the early colonial period and the subsequent inclusion of Taiwan into the Qing empire. The focus will be on the mid nineteenth century, on the coexistence and conflicts among the Taiwanese population and on the struggles with foreign powers. As a special feature, guest professors Dr. Chien Hung-yi will give two lectures on the seventeenth century, and we will invite Professor Lin Hsin-yi to present her view on the mid-nineteenth century. We will show excerpts of the 2021 TV series "Seqalu: Formosa 1867" (斯卡羅), and Prof. Lin will discuss the perception of the series, the presentation of the history of Taiwan in the media, and the memories of the colonial official Charles Le Gendre, one of the important figures during this time.

    The film show will be open to the public.

    BA Exercise: Tutorial for Elementary Taiwanese

    Teacher: Wu Kuan-wei, M.A.
    Time: Wednesdays, 16-18 h

    Course information: This is a tutorial for Elementary Tâi-gí (Taiwanese Holo Language). It is intended for practice of pronounciation and conversation.

    MA Seminar: The Languages of Taiwan
    Guest Professor: Ass. Prof. Dr. Li Taiyuan, National Chengchi University, Taipeh, Taiwan

    This course discusses Taiwan's multi-ethnic society and the research of different languages of Taiwan through the viewpoints of linguistics and ethnology. The topics of this course include linguistic features, resources of research, language development and language planning of Taiwan's national languages, those of Aboriginal peoples, of the Hakka, of the Holo (Taiwanese) and of the Mainland Immigrants. The relationships between languages and cultures of Taiwan will also be analyzed.

    BA Seminar: Elementary Tâi-gí (Taiwanese Holo Language)
    Guest Professor: Ass. Prof. Dr. Khu Uihim, Department of Taiwanese Literature, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan

    This course aims at explaining the structure and characteristics of Tâi-gí (Holo Language) so that the students will understand its basic phonetics, morphology, grammar, and syntax. It offers practical exercises in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Besides, the course will give an general outline of the history, current situation, transcription systems, learning resources, idiomatic expression of Tâi-gí.

    This is a tutorial for Dr. Khu Uihim’s language course on Elementary Tâi-gí (Taiwanese Holo Language). It is intended for practice of pronounciation and conversation.

    his exhibition of works by documentary photographer Sung Lung-Chuan portrays the initial phase of Taiwan's democratic transition. The pictures show the turning point before and after the abolition of Martial Law in the years 1986 to 1989.
