![]() The Khopyor river winds south through the north-west of the Volgograd region. This river gave this region its historical name, which is the Khopyor region of the Don. Today, there are several administrative areas on this territory. The largest town in the north-west is Uryupinsk, the former stanitsa Uryupinkskaya. Here, there is a large abatoire, a factory for tinned goods and a factory for vegetable oil. Uryupinsk has appr. 44,000 inhabitants, about 60% of the region's population. |
Further to the south-east, there lies the small and quaint regional center of Nekhaevski. If one crosses the river near where the Khopyor flows into the Don, one reaches the once-important stanitsa of Ust-Khopyorskaya. Today, this town has surrendered its influence to the town of Serafimovitch, the former stanitsa Ust-Medveditskaya.
