The crystallography group is primarily concerned with the investigation and interpretation of correlations between structure and properties of crystals. In particular, the elastic properties of crystals are investigated, since they depend almost exclusively on the interactions between the building blocks of a crystal and thus reflect the anisotropy of its bonding system macroscopically in a certain way. Our most important method, which is also actively further developed in the group, is ultrasonic resonance spectroscopy. In principle, it allows the determination of all independent elastic, piezoelectric and dielectric constants of a crystal on a specimen as a function of temperature and frequency. Furthermore, we use different methods of thermal analysis, dilatometry and of course X-ray and neutron diffraction methods for structural characterization of the crystals.
