CEAPPP aims at promoting EU studies at RUB, its Faculty of East Asian Studies, amongst the Alliance for Research on East Asia Ruhr (AREA Ruhr, a joint organisation of the universities of Duisburg-Essen and Bochum), as well as the international network of universities in Europe and Asia already cooperating with RUB’s Faculty of East Asian Studies.

Prof. Bersick will conduct the main teaching work, providing twelve undergraduate as well as graduate seminars that deal with the major theoretical and empirical aspects of EU-Asia relations, regional integration in Europe and Asia, as well as the bilateral and multilateral relations between the EU and major state, non-state and regional actors in the Asian region. Teaching follows-up on the work started during the time of the first Jean Monnet Chair hosted from 2016-2019. CEAPPP intends to promote and further consolidate the interest in and teaching of EU studies at faculty- and university-level and includes newly created seminars, e.g. on “The International Politics and Economics of EU-Asia Connectivity” which is to deal with new dimensions of EU studies such as the EU-Asia connectivity strategy, China’s role in it, and the evolving “European Way”.
At the same time, Ms. Paulo will conduct five undergraduate as well as graduate seminars. One seminar will focus on EU-China relations with the novelty that literature and study sources will include Chinese original sources. The second seminar will be dealing with the EU’s role in digital connectivity in East Asia and will be delivered as an eLearning seminar, applying a digital methodology to reach a larger number of students at RUB and also in certain Asian universities. The aim is to increase interest in understanding the EU, knowledge about the EU’s role in Asia, awareness of the EU in the Asian region and leading to more active people-to-people exchanges via digital learning tools.
