IMPRESSIONS OF THE SEMINAR "THE ROLE OF INTERREGIONALISM" IN WINTER 2017/18

The course "The Role of Inter-Regionalism and Integration in the EU's Foreign Policy: The Case of Asia (ASO)" is part of Prof. Bersick's Jean Monnet Chair for "The International Political Economy of EU-Asia relations. In winter semester 2017/18, the M.A. level seminar introduced students to the study of the European Union's foreign plicy towards Asia. For the first time, a seminar was held in more than one country simultaneously. It included students from different nationalities and academic backgrounds. Students from Ruhr Universtiy Bochum and from the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) at the University of Malaya participated in the seminar. A joined e-classroom enabled the students and professors to take part in the seminar and share their knowledge and thoughts. Major theoretical approaches to the analysis of regional integration, inter-regionalism and the EU's foreign policy were introduced and discussed in various sessions. In presentations, students applied the concepts to existing inter-regional institutions and policies between the EU and Asia, for instance EU-ASEAN, the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the case of Central Asia.
