History of China

Our department focuses upon teaching the political and institutional context of historical events since around 500 BCE up until the present. Key aspects are the relationships between the centre and the periphery in Imperial China, the Republic, and the People's Republic. This involves the material culture as well as technical and socioeconomic history. In research, the core areas are the early modern and modern periods. Current projects concern labour conditions, guilds, capitalism and industrialisation, political campaigns on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and conceptions of the future in both the past and present.
