The research area "Mediterranean Studies" is institutionally anchored to the Centre of Mediterranean Studies at the Ruhr-University of Bochum. The Centre is Germany's first academic institution dedicated to researching the Mediterranean across various disciplines and periods and has been supported between 2010 and 2016 by the Federal Ministry for Research and Education. By means of interdisciplinary cooperation, the research into the Mediterranean has developed a profile influenced by the approaches of the humanities, of cultural and of social studies. In collaboration with national and international research facilities, projects examining the Mediterranean’s past and present from different perspectives are initiated. Currently, a particular focus of research lies on migration in the Mediterranean and the formation of different types of social organisation observable along rivers and deltas.
