About studying mathematics at RUB

The Faculty of Mathematics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum provides excellent mathematics instruction. The curriculum is delivered in high-quality lectures accompanied by practical tutorials as well as in seminars that introduce students to scientific methods.

After the basics have been covered in the first year of study within the bachelor’s degree programmes, a wide range of topics that are closely aligned with the faculty’s research topics are available for more in-depth study. In their bachelor’s and master’s theses students are introduced to current research topics.

Lectures, tutorials, and seminars are generally held in German. On request, advanced courses may – if appropriate – be held in English. Lectures regularly held in English are listed in the international course catalogue.

The following degree programmes are available in mathematics

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Arts (double specialisation)
  • Master of Science
  • Master of Education
  • Doctoral programme

Since the winter semester of 2011/12, admission to the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science programmes in mathematics has been restricted. Applicants must therefore adhere to application deadlines.

Further information about particular degree programmes is available from the Mathematics Programme Advising Office or on the German-language pages of the university website related to studies.

As a participant in the Erasmus programme, the Faculty of Mathematics is linked with a number of partner faculties in other European countries. However, study visits at RUB are also possible outside of this programme.

Moreover, the faculty is involved with the following degree programmes
