Return to online teaching

Update 20 January:

All rules apply until 14 February 2021.

Update 13 January:

Until 31 January 2021, seminars, exercises or comparable course formats will only take place online. This decision is based on the currently valid decrees of the state of NRW. In justified exceptional cases, in-person lab internships or comparable course formats with practical components can take place after special approval. In this case, the students concerned will be informed directly by their teachers about the regulations.

Update 11 January:

Once the specific regulations for universities in the state of NRW are available in the week beginning 11 January 2021, we will provide information on this here.

Following the new Coronavirus Protection Regulation in the state of NRW, the Rectorate at RUB has decided that no in-person teaching or examinations should take place from 16 December 2020 until 10 January 2021. Read more.

General information

Will the winter semester 2020/21 count towards the standard period of study? (17 December 2020)

No. Like the summer semester, the winter semester 2020/2021 will not count towards the individual standard period of study of RUB students, unless students make use of the option of taking a leave of absence.

Will students in winter semester 2020/21 be granted an additional failed attempt at module final examinations? (17 December 2020)

Yes, the rectorate has decided to reintroduce the blanket provision of an additional examination attempt for failed final module examinations.

What rules apply to access to the campus (17 December 2020)

We have compiled all regulations for access to the campus in detail for you.

Roules for access to campus

A face mask (mouth-nose cover) has to be worn on campus. Due to the suspension of in-person teaching and examinations and the closure of student workplaces, there are hardly any occasions to enter the campus. These regulations are initially valid until 31 January 2021.

Will in-person courses be cancelled altogether by the end of the semester? (13 January 2021)

The current regulations for the prohibition of in-person events are valid for the time being until 31 January 2021. We will inform about a possible extension or new regulations here.

Is there a possibility for extension of time for completion of written exams? (17 December 2020)

The examination regulations at RUB provide for the possibility of an extension of the processing time. For this purpose, students contact the examiner and submit an appropriately justified request for an extension to the examination board.

Can the campus be used as a place of stay? (17 December 2020)

No. The campus can be entered and then immediately left only in the case of in-person exams with special permission and to pick up books from the UB circulation service.

Can windowless lecture halls be adequately supplied with fresh air? (19 October 2020)

All of the RUB’s rooms are equipped with either windows or ventilation systems. Even during normal operations, the ventilation systems always use a percentage of fresh air that is adjusted to the number of the rooms’ occupants in order to ensure maximum safety. As a precautionary measure, the building managers have increased the percentage of fresh air in all ventilation systems to 100 per cent, so that no system uses recirculated air at all.
Please take the direct route to your destination and leave the campus by the shortest route. If you arrive in good time, e.g. for an exam, please wait in one of the numerous open spaces on campus to avoid large gathering in front of the exam rooms.

Re-registering

Social insurance contribution (“Sozialbeitrag”) for the winter semester 2020/2021 (24 July 2020)

The social insurance contribution for the winter semester 2020/21 for newly enrolled students is 335.09 Euro.

Included in the amount are contributions for:

  • the semester ticket (including NRW-Ticket) 206.97 Euro
  • the academic services office Akademische Förderungswerk (e.g. for Mensa and student halls) 110 Euro
  • the ASTA 18.12 Euro (15.62 Euro for the student union, 1.00 Euro for the theatre Schauspielhaus, 1.50 Euro for access to the bike rental system)

As registered student, if you have already paid a social insurance contribution in the summer semester 2020, your social insurance contribution for the winter semester is only 334.15 Euro (because of the VAT reduction on the VRR ticket price).

The transfer data can only be accessed via eCampus.

As Ruhr-Universität merely passes on the money to ASTA and Akafö, the university can’t decide whether and how these contributions should be potentially reduced. Ruhr-Universität does continuously communicate with the responsible persons and passes on the students’ feedback.

How can I check if my re-registration has been completed? (24 July 2020)

Please check whether you can print out a certificate of enrolment (“Studienbescheinigung”) for the relevant semester via eCampus. If so, everything’s fine.

If not, please read the question “Why wasn’t my rematriculation approved?”

What are the possible reasons that my re-registration is not completed despite payment? (24 July 2020)

If you are not yet re-registrated, there may be various reasons:

You have not yet paid your social insurance contribution, including late fees, or the money has not yet been credited to the RUB account.

Please note that, depending on your bank, it may take several days before the money is credited to the RUB account. A rapid transfer or online bank transfer doesn’t necessarily speed up the process. Therefore, please transfer your social insurance contribution in good time before 30 September 2020.

If you still can’t retrieve the certificate of enrolment (“Studienbescheinigung”) via eCampus after one week, please check your bank statement and contact the Registrar’s Office for verification by phone or email.

Our records state that you can’t re-registrated at present, which can have various reasons:

  • You have successfully completed your degree course after your last exam. If this is the case, you can no longer rematriculate for this course and you must exmatriculate or change your course.
  • You have definitively failed your degree and must either exmatriculate or change your course.
  • There is a problem with your health insurance status.
  • There are other reasons at the faculty, which you need to discuss.

As there may be other reasons, please contact the Registrar’s Office at stud-sekretariat@uv.rub.de.

I have transferred the social insurance contribution. Why wasn’t my re-registration approved yet? (24 July 2020)

The deadline for payment of the social insurance contribution always refers to the date of receipt of payment into the Ruhr-Universität account. If you only paid on the last day of the rematriculation deadline or later, the money may not have been credited to Ruhr-Universität in time.

If payment is received late, a late fee of 10 Euro must be paid to complete rematriculation. You will find the relevant information on this page (german website).

I have transferred the late fee of 10 Euro. Is my re-registration completed now? (24 July 2020)

Please check whether you can retrieve your certificate of enrolment (“Studienbescheinigung”) for the relevant semester via eCampus. If so, everything’s fine.

If not, the money has not yet been credited to the Ruhr-Universität account.

How do I re-register as visiting/cross-registered student (“Zweithörer”)? (24 July 2020)

In order to rematriculate, please submit your certificate of study (“Studienbescheinigung”) for the respective semester from your home university as a PDF file by email to stud-sekretariat@uv.rub.de.
