Myogenic cell migration: Cell migration forms as essential module on the embryonic developmental curriculum. It ensures that proper cells and tissues end up at appropriate sites for eventual differentiation. My research interests are to study cell migration during embryonic development especially in the context of limb myogenesis. In this context we have shown that chemokine receptor CXCR4 and its ligand SDF-1 guide the migration of myogenic precursor cells from the somites to the limbs and later during development, from the hindlimb back towards the midline to form cloacal muscles in the chicken embryo.

Chicken Mesonephros and human podocytopathies: With emerging studies on the pathological mechanisms underlying proteinuria, the term nephropathy is becoming increasingly synonymous to podocytopathy. The intricate foot processes of the podocyte and the interdigitating transmembrane proteins forming the slit diaphragm contribute to the formation of the filtration barrier at the urinary pole. Mutations in the genes involved in the formation of the slit diaphragm (Nephrin, Podocin and Neph1) lead to severe congenital nephropathies with massive proteinuria.
The embryonic kidney of chicken embryos has a mesonephric origin and is functional from day 5 of in ovo development. We are developing a tissue specific lentiviral driven RNAi system in ovo to study the function of mesonephron and podocyte specific genes during podocyte differentiation and its implication in human nephropathies.
