Alumni Barbecue and Silver Doctorate Party in May 2019

An Alumni Barbecue and Silver Doctorate Party took place for the first time on 24 May 2019. Former members of all RUB faculties were invited. Alumni who completed their doctorates 25 years ago at the RUB were awarded a special honour.

In the late afternoon, 160 guests gathered at the RUB Mensa bistro and made their way to their faculty tables. Rector Prof. Axel Schölmerich welcomed the guests and in a short talk outlined the status of the campus development and the RUB's application in the excellence competition.

Certificates for “Silver Doctors”

After hunger had been satisfied at the barbecue buffet, the Rector and Deans of the respective faculties handed over the new PhD certificates to the Silver Doctors. Some of the Alumni talked about what they do today professionally – that was not only the reflection of the diversity of a comprehensive university, but also of the fact that Alumni are successful ambassadors for the RUB in science and business.

Arrival from Chile

The prize for the furthest journey went to Prof. Dr. Barrera Salas, a Silver Doctor from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, who had set out from Santiago de Chile to get to Bochum.
The event came to a pleasant and convivial conclusion. The aim of getting Alumni to talk to each other and representatives of their faculties was definitely achieved – there were even rumours of the odd cooperation project having been launched on this evening!

“MasterPlan” with Alumni participation

The Alumni Barbecue and Silver Doctorate Party was embedded in the major cross-faculty event “MasterPlan – Finde dein Masterstudium und triff unsere Alumni” [“Find your MA course and meet our Alumni”]. MasterPlan opened up perspectives for a master’s degree at the RUB to potential students who are interested in doing an MA at the RUB and from the region: there was an MA fair in the morning in the Audimax and in the afternoon there were MA information events in the faculties. Alumni, as experienced role models, had the opportunity to answer questions posed by those interested in doing a master’s course.

A Retrospective

First RUB Alumni Homecoming in June 2015

The RUB opened up its doors to students in 1965. Which means that it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. And we celebrated this with our Alumni: as part of the RUB anniversary celebrations, the First Great RUB Alumni Homecoming took place at the weekend of 5-7 June 2015.

The RUB had a programme of events that was packed with variety and had something for everyone:

Faculty reunions

The weekend was started with the Faculty reunions in their respective buildings. Under the slogan of "Das Beste aus Forschung und Lehre heute" ["The best of research and teaching today"] Alumni had the opportunity to take an exclusive look at their respective former places of activity – and also to meet up with former colleagues, of course. Laboratories, auditoria and seminar rooms could be viewed; there were experience tours, finger food and champagne receptions: at the
Faculty of Sports Science, for instance or theFaculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

RUB50 Gala in the Mensa

Afterwards, guests at the great RUB50 Gala were able to enjoy a very special evening in the festively decorated Mensa. WDR presenters Désirée Rösch and Lars Tottmann (both RUB Alumni) guided them through a varied programme of events with Götz Alsmann, Pamela Falcon, Mambo Kurt and many other artists. They were able to have a souvenir photo taken in the Mensa foyer, find out about the latest developments on the RUB campus and listen to some relaxing jazz music.

BlauPause on Universitätsstraße

The day after, on Saturday, Alumni, Bochumers and RUB employees were able to experience BlauPause in the open air: five kilometres of Bochum's Universitätsstraße were closed the night before and declared a "festival mile". The RUB and the University City of Bochum presented themselves at about 1,200 tables. More than 100,000 visitors came by on their bikes, rollerblades or on foot and enjoyed the hustle and bustle in the bright sunshine.

Farewell Brunch

The Alumni reunion was concluded in a cosy and familial atmosphere at a mutual brunch on Sunday.
