Research Group (Lehrstuhl) for
Materials Science and Engineering
Materials
Science and Engineering is an inter-disciplinary field that
has
developed from solid state physics, physical and organic chemistry, and
engineering disciplines.
Related research investigates the inter-relationship between the
structure, properties, processing and performance of engineering
materials. In the
last century, materials science has evolved into one of the key
engineering subjects that has triggered important technological
developments.
The
Research Group (Lehrstuhl) for Materials Science and Engineering at
the Ruhr-University Bochum offers courses for both undergraduate
and graduate degrees. Research is performed in five areas:
structural materials,
functional materials, reactions in solids and at interfaces, materials
characterization, and modelling. The research focuses mainly on
the microstructural aspects of engineering materials.
Students can familiarize themselves with all of the structural material
groups; metals, glass
and ceramics, polymers and composite materials. In addition
to a
Center for Shape Memory Technology and other projects supported by
federal funds, we collaborate with our
industry partners on a number of different R&D projects.
