The Research Group (Lehrstuhl) for Materials Science and Engineering shares state-of-the-art experimental facilities with the other two units (materials technology and materials testing) in the Institute for Materials (IM).
Materials processing
a two vacuum induction furnaces for melting ingots up to 5 kg
a small rolling mill for cold and hot rolling
a wire drawing bench including a device for pointing wires (0.08 to 5 mm diameter)
a
swaging machine for cylindrical specimens (diameter up to 10 mm)
a melt spinning device for the production of rapidly quenched ribbons
Testing machines for the characterization of mechanical properties of materials
a
creep laboratory
a instrumented Charpy impact tester
a several hydraulic and mechanical test rigs for loads between 5 and 400 kN in the temperature range from -100 to +1100°C (attachments: vacuum chamber, fast drawing device etc.)
a equipment for wear testing at temperatures up to 1000°C
a mechanical microprobe for computer-aided scratching and hardness measurements of thin layers and phases as well as for the determination of Young's modulus
Equipment for non-destructive testing and characterization of physical material properties
a two x-ray diffractometers for identification and determination of phases and textures and of residual stresses
a ultrasonic testing devices
a laboratory for measuring electrical and magnetic properties
a device for determining permeability and roughness
Microstructural characterization
a several optical microscopes
a two SEMs with EDS
a two TEMs (with FE and LaB6 cathodes)
a
heating and cooling holders and in-situ deformation holders for TEM
a image analysis systems for quantitative analysis of microstructural features
a electron and x-ray diffraction patterns can be analyzed using supportive software packages
Miscellaneous
a devices for spark spectography
a thermal analysis (DSC, TGA, dilatometer)
a Nd:YAG laser
Machine Shop
a A well equipped machine shop assists in specimen machining and in the setting up special research equipment. The workshop offers NC lathes, milling machines and spark erosion equipment.
