Project Management

Dr. Zorob's office is affiliated to Administrative Department 2, Student Services & International Office, at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. In addition, she is member of the board of directors of  the Centre for Mediterranean Studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Academic and Professional Career

Anja Zorob studied Islamic Sciences / Middle Eastern Studies, Oriental Philology and Economics at the Universities of Freiburg, Damascus and Bochum. She obtained her PhD in Contemporary Research on the Middle East (Major: Economics) from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2005 (Doctoral Thesis: "Syrien im Spannungsfeld zwischen der Euro-Mediterranen Partnerschaft und der Großen Arabischen Freihandelszone").

Before joining the Administrative Department as head of the “University without Borders” project Dr. Zorob was senior research fellow at the RUB Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE). In addition, she lectured at the RUB Department of Oriental and Islamic Studies and the Faculty of Social Science. At the IEE she established, among others, the DAAD-funded German Arab Joint Research, Training and Networking Programme "Conflict, Reconstruction and Sustainable Development in the Middle East" and served as its directing manager. Besides other former positions at German universities and research institutes Dr. Zorob provided consulting to ministries and development organizations.

Research and Teaching

Anja Zorob's research and teaching record mainly focuses on the subject areas of Economic Development, Development Cooperation and Political Economy of Reform in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Another key area includes Regional Integration in MENA (esp. intra-Arab cooperation) besides MENA countries' economic and political relations with external partners, in particular Europe (Euro-Mediterranean and EU-GCC relations). Her current research covers Chances and Risks of Overlapping Free Trade Agreements, EU Mediterranean Policy (esp. commercial, development and migration policies) and Conflict and Reconstruction in the Middle East.
