Courses during Term Time

All RUB students are entitled to attend free-of-charge courses in addition to their degree programme, such as language courses, tutorials, and workshops on academic methodology. These courses complement your degree programme and help you to on your path towards successful graduation.

Language courses

While studying at the university, you have the opportunity to improve your language skills in German, English or other languages by attending specialised language courses, communication training or presentation workshops.

The German as a Foreign Language department (DaF) at RUB offers advanced courses for improving your German language skills. They include:

  • Communication training I + II
  • Argumentation and presentation in scientific discourse
  • Economical terminology
  • Technological terminology
  • Medical terminology

Please note that the application deadline for the courses ends before the beginning of the semester.

At the University Language Center (ZfA), RUB students have the option to improve their foreign language or second language skills, either in general terms or discipline-specific, and learn new languages. The courses include:

  • English for international students
  • English for Academic Purposes (different levels, from B1 to C1)
  • Business English: Intercultural Management
  • English for natural scientists
  • Technical English
  • English for medicine students

Scientific methodology and writing

The Scientific Writing Center provides assistance to students with regard to „scientific writing in Germany“. Their services include:

  • Schreibcafé: A place for writing, exchange, and peer advice
  • Workshop: Writing term papers
  • Workshop: Writing a final thesis
  • Intensive course: Preparation for a final thesis in natural and engineering sciences

Schreibmaschine, a branch of the Scientific Writing Center, provides assistance on writing and workshops specifically for students pursuing engineering degrees. Their services include:

Tutorials specifically for international students and refugees

Tutorial „Tell me“: multi-lingual learning facilitation in the field of construction technology
You can ask questions about technical terms and components resp. German terminology in the „Tell me“ tutorial. Mechanical engineering students meet up each Friday from 12 noon till 2:30 pm in CIP-Pool 3, IC building, floor 03, room 452/40.

Buddy programme Natural.PALS
German and international biology students meet up in the Buddy programme „Natural.PALS“.

Semester programme International Office

The International Office organises an exciting semester programme for international students every semester. It includes workshops, excursions, and language cafés.

An additional LanguageCafé for refugees and German students takes place on Wednesdays from 5 pm to 8 pm at Euroeck (Spechtsweg 20).
