Friday, September 6th, 2002:

1st Talk:

Ludger Pries (Ruhr University of Bochum): The Spatial Spanning of the Social. Transnationalism as a challenge and chance for the social science(s)

Summary:

Prof. Pries distinguishes between different forms of (Inter-)Nationalization: Inter-nationalization; Supra-nationalization, Renationalization, Globalization, Glocalization, Diaspora- Internationalization and Transnationalization.

The debate on Transnationalism is marked by a specific relation between social and geographical space : one geographical space may contain various social spaces, while one social space might span different geographical spaces.

2nd Talk:

Michael Peter Smith (University of California, Davis): Transnationalism: A Cultural, Political or Geographical Metaphor

Summary:

Transnationalism is not a new phenomenon, but has risen sharply over the last two decades. It is the complex connectivity of different localities and is defined by multidimensionality in the areas of economy, the social, culture, religion etc.. Transnational movements are nation-spanning, border-crossing and trans-local; they are characterized by transnational agents. Unlike globalization the existence of Transnationalism still depends on the legal construction of nation-states.

While Pries delimited Transnationalism from the other concepts mentioned, Smith tried to integrate some of them under the heading of Transnationalism.

Diaspora movements, for example, have pluri-local means but local or national ends; therefore, it can be considered a form of (Re-)Nationalization, making both just specific forms of Transnationalization.

Also, Smith considers the following questions to be crucial when analyzing transnational phenomena:

  1. Who makes what place out of which spaces? (The politics of place-making).
  2. Who can participate in what, where and how?

The results of Saturday's discussion are available in the virtual workspace.
